Residency Application Process

Residency Application Process

The Family Medicine Residency Program accepts applications through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) only. Residents are selected through the National Resident Matching Program.  Please contact your Dean’s office for instructions and further information, as we will not accept any paper applications, nor do we accept unsolicited faxes sent to our office.

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or a permanent U.S. resident.  Our residency does not sponsor any type of visa.
  • Must have graduated from medical school within the last 5 years.
  • All applicants must meet the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners licensing requirements prior to acceptance.  You must be a graduate of an accredited school of medicine or osteopathic school.  It must be listed on the Texas State Board of Medical Examiner’s list of approved schools.  You may visit their website at http://www.tsbme.state.tx.us to make this determination.
  • Must have passed Step 1, Step 2 and CSA of USMLE on the first attempt.
  • Must have a score of 80 or better on each step of the USMLE exam.
  • Must have a specified interest in Family Medicine. Preference will be given to applicants who have a specified desire to practice in Texas.
  •  Must be proficient in spoken and written English language.
  • International graduates must be certified by the ECFMG.
  • Must have at least one year of US clinical experience, defined as “supervised direct patient care”.  Research or observership positions, which do not entail a significant involvement in the medical management of patients, do not fulfill the spirit of this requirement.

A complex ERAS application includes:

  • USMLE/COMLEX score reports
  • A Dean’s letter
  • A transcript
  • Three letters of reference (two of which should come from the area of primary care)
